Veteran shows off her work in Intro to Printmaking for military personnel

Open House for Arts in Service

by Catherine Shappell | January 4, 2018

Arts in Service, our newest Engagement program, will offer free arts classes to veterans and military personnel, thanks to generous support from The Boeing Company. Through studio arts experiences service members can pursue personal goals; whether those are finding a supportive community, stress relief, working toward overall health and wellness, or pursuing career interests in art-making. Enrollment for these classes are open to service members and provide a creative pathway to create camaraderie between individuals with a common thread. Studies show the numerous advantages of participating in art classes, providing benefits to the mind, body and soul. Art can be a stress-reliever, improve our moods, build a stronger and healthier mind, contribute to a quality of life, and offer community interaction.

For those who are accustomed to structure and discipline, adjusting to a civilian lifestyle can be challenging. Arts in Service classes offer a space to interact with other service members while providing an outlet, offer support and create friendships in a relaxed environment. Available classes may include ceramics, welding and sculpture, printmaking and watercolor. Led by teaching artists, there are very few “art rules” in these classes, and there is no right or wrong answers. For many people creating art, regardless of form, this is a terrific way to clear their mind and focus on the creativity at hand. In the end, every piece of art work is personal and expressive in its own way.

Classes begin in January with 8-week sessions and intensive weekend workshops may also available. Unsure if you’re ready to commit? Stop by the Arts in Service Open House on Saturday, January 13, from 10 a.m. to noon, for veterans, service members and their families to explore the studios, try various art forms and meet our studio instructors.

There are over 625,000 service members, veterans and family members living in the state of Arizona. Do you know a veteran or military member who might enjoy the benefits of art? Arts in Service celebrates the men and women of our armed services and veterans by serving those who serve our country.
