If you’re red-green color blind, come try EnChroma glasses for color blindness and experience the vibrant colors at Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum at Mesa Arts Center! You can borrow and enjoy EnChroma glasses during your visit as part of our mission of accessibility and inclusivity for all of our members and patrons.
EnChroma glasses enable people with red-green color blindness to see an expanded range of clear, vibrant, distinct color and enjoy enhanced detail and depth perception. Color blindness affects one in 12 men (8%) and one in 200 women (.5%) – an estimated 13 million in the US and 350 million worldwide.
Take EnChroma’s online color vision test to learn your type and level of color blindness by clicking here. Then, bring color blind family and friends to borrow the glasses.
While people with normal color vision see over one million shades of color, those with color vision deficiency only see about 10% of those hues and shades. As a result, their world view is dull and less vibrant, with some colors appearing muddled, muted, washed out or indistinguishable. To them, purple looks blue, red seems brown, gray appears pink, and green and yellow can look similar.
The color blind can struggle to see the red in a flower, the variation of colors in a rainbow, a painting, the true hair or eye color of a loved one, red and green stoplights and more. In viewing artwork, the color blind may struggle to see some colors. In school, the condition can cause frustration and challenges in learning. Here are some examples of how the color blind see:
EnChroma’s patented lenses are engineered with special optical filters that enable the color blind to see a broader range of colors more clearly, vibrantly and distinctly so they can experience colorful art, the beauty of nature, overcome everyday challenges and better understand and appreciate colors.
Importantly, EnChroma glasses are not a cure or correction for color blindness, they work for approximately eight out of 10 people with red-green color blindness, do not provide full color vision and results and reaction times vary. Read this recent study by the University of California, Davis, and France’s INSERM Stem Cell and Brain Research Institute, about the effectiveness of EnChroma glasses.
EnChroma glasses are available in outdoor and indoor lenses that can also be customized for prescription. They range in price from $189 to $349 and come in adult and kids’ sizes. They can be purchased via EnChroma.com or at nearly 400 Authorized EnChroma Retailer locations throughout the U.S. and worldwide.
Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum at Mesa Arts Center and EnChroma are proud to partner to enable access to more of life’s colorful experiences for those with color vision deficiency
A Docent is a teacher who serves Mesa Contemporary Arts and the community in the field of art education. Docents are considered key volunteers and extensions of the Mesa Contemporary Arts staff. They provide public and private tours and provide auxiliary security in exhibition areas during special events and opening receptions. Docents attend bi-monthly meetings, which include lectures and workshops on current exhibitions as well as art related field trips. For more information, contact Museum Curator, Mary-Beth Buesgen.
Museum Admissions Attendants are primarily responsible for ensuring a welcoming and positive experience for all visitors to Mesa Contemporary Arts. These volunteers manage the Admissions Desk, handle Point of Sale transactions for museum admissions, greet visitors upon arrival and on the phone, answering general questions and providing friendly customer service to all patrons. For more information, contact Museum Curator, Mary-Beth Buesgen.
Internships are a way students can gain professional experience and provide a service in their community. At Mesa Contemporary Arts, interns are an integral part of the staff and assist with all aspects of the museum, including curatorial, objects management, exhibition installation and art education. Interns become familiar with proper museum procedures and expand their knowledge of the profession. For more information, contact Museum Curator, Mary-Beth Buesgen.
