You enter backstage, check to make sure your name is on the list, grab a drink ticket, and mosey into a dark room with dreamy lighting and a beat that’s mellow and engaging, just enough to set the mood for the evening. You settle into one of the scattered tables and wait to see what the lineup is for the The Word Project, something described as Intellectually Fresh and Sophisticatedly Dope. And they deliver just that. A collection of crazy talented storytellers and poets fill the evening, perfectly complimented by music and conversation. Tania Katan talks about growing up crashing company picnics, Dahlak Brathwaite talks about the 12 times he encountered the police as a black man simply commuting from one place to the next, and Fatima Halim shares the story of discovering an underground world in the subways of New York. The Word Project kicked things off with a bang, promising to keep it fresh and respond to input from attendees as the program develops with monthly shows starting in the summer. Join us for the next show on March 23rd, 6:30-9 PM, including another lineup that will not disappoint and complimented by an open mic opportunity for attendees. Grab your tickets before they’re gone!
