You’re invited! Be one of the first people to experience Mesa Musical Shadows on Saturday, April 2, as the new, interactive artwork is unveiled in a special program at 2 p.m.. The ever-creative and savvy masters of conversation-starting interactive artwork, Daily tous les jours, have completed work on installation of the work that has been in the works for more than a year.
In fact, you may have been a part of this from the beginning. Through on-site surveys, feedback sessions, test-runs, and more, the community has been providing ideas and direction for the work from design to implementation. Response from the community led Melissa Mongiat and Mouna Andraos to build the piece around a resource we have no shortage of: light!
Mesa Musical Shadows will be activated by the shadows made by people who walk near and across sensors that are now in the north plaza. Each sensor will respond to changes in light, which will trigger different melodic or percussive sounds, emitted through speakers embedded in the ground. If multiple sensors are activated by a group of people playing together, a complex composition can be created. Not unlike the famous 21 Swings, also by Daily tous les jours.
After the big reveal and ribbon cutting this Saturday, April 2 and 2 p.m., everyone is invited to “play” the piece!
Mesa Musical Shadows is generously supported by a grant from ArtPlace America. It is part of the 21st Century Cafe Society Project, a multi-phase initiative to create a welcoming and activated environment at MAC's north entry plaza.
