A Voice of an Angel - err, Clown?

The first thought that might go through one’s head when they hear the name ‘Puddles Pity Party’ while seeing a photograph of the 6’8” man garnished in clown costume, adorned in a golden bent crown with a letter ‘P’ and face paint is that this is definitely not something for adults. However, the contrary is true – this is indeed a clown geared for adults. If you’re a fan of American Horror Story, Puddles slightly resembles a pre-terrifying Twisty from before his dark days loomed in.

Simply wanting to entertain his audience he not only captures the silliness that embodies a clown, but the overall charisma he emits all the while being silent. Silent until it is time to belt out a melody with a voice that will melt you to your core. No matter what the genre (he ranged from current pop to older classics) he has an intricate way of transposing a song to fit his persona with gloomy baritones and a sweeter dusting of hope in the overtones.

Honestly, I wasn’t sure what Puddles had in store for his performance. I thought it might just be him up on stage standing and singing the entire time. Dazzling the audience with his quirkiness and humor he positively surprised me. He utilized the entire performance space with stage props and human props. Yes, that’s right – human props. Puddles frequently went into the audience and brought willing and sometimes more timid guests to help him on stage on his June 13th performance at Mesa Arts Center. The sold-out show both engaged and captivated the audience.

Delectably dark in nature but sweet in demeanor, this is one clown not to fear (unless you are sitting in the front rows and are deathly afraid of stage fright). If you see that Puddles Pity Party is rolling into your town for a night you would have to be a complete buffoon not to go witness him in front of an admiring crowd.

*And if you do go make sure to buy one of those adorable little golden crowns at the merch table. Trust that you’ll have fun putting it on everything as you’d see from the show.
